Questions we hear

Before you book.

How long should a central AC last in Southern California?

Usually 12 to 15 years. Long inland summers wear a system faster than a mild coastal climate does, so a unit in Riverside often ages quicker than the same model in Huntington Beach. Regular servicing is what gets you to the long end of that range.

Should I repair or replace my AC?

Look at the age and the repair bill together. A minor fault on a newer system is worth fixing. A major repair on a unit past 10 to 12 years old usually isn't, and older R-22 systems are costly to recharge. Our guide to AC blowing warm air covers the common faults.

What size AC do I need?

Square footage alone isn't enough. Proper sizing uses a load calculation that accounts for insulation, windows, sun exposure and ductwork. An oversized unit cycles on and off and leaves the house clammy. An undersized one runs constantly and still can't keep up.

What temperature should I set my AC to?

A good starting point is 78°F when you're home and warmer when you're out or asleep. Our thermostat temperature calculator gives you settings for your part of Southern California.

Do I need a permit to replace my AC?

Usually yes. California cities generally require a mechanical permit for a system replacement, and many projects need a duct leakage test under the state energy code. A licensed contractor should handle this as part of the job, so ask about it before you sign.
